The lion might be king in Venice, but on the islands of Murano it is the cock (gallo) which rules the roost. The cock traditionally represents vigilance and since the beginning of the sixteenth century, it has often been depicted with a serpent (prudence) in its beak and a fox (cunning) on its back. The cock might be the symbol of Murano, but sightings of it are few and far between. Comments are closed.
