The colossal statue of Santa Veronica (1629-32), which stands in one of the four niches in the crossing of St Peter's Basilica, is the work of the Tuscan sculptor, Francesco Mochi (1580-1654). The statue, which is signed 'FRANCISCUS MOCHIUS A MONTE VARCHI FACIEBAT', celebrates what was once the most famous relic in the church, namely the sudarium or veil of Saint Veronica.
