The funerary monument to Pope Urban VIII, which stands in St Peter's Basilica, was executed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), who completed it in 1647. Urban VIII (r. 1623-44) belonged to the Barberini family, whose coat arms was made up of three bees. Bernini added a number of the heraldic bees to the pope's monument. Several gilded bees can easily be spotted on the marble pedestal. The two statues depict Charity and Justice. Comments are closed.
