Weathervane, Palazzo Montecitorio

The weather vane on the Palazzo Montecitorio takes the form a pair of wings and an hourglass, reminding us that time does indeed fly.

The Palazzo Montecitorio was begun in 1653 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) and completed, almost half a century later, by Carlo Fontana (1638-1714). In 1871 it became the seat of the Camera dei Deputati (Chamber of Deputies), one of the two houses of the Italian Parliament.

The palazzo was enlarged by Ernesto Basile between 1904 and 1926, when it was given a grand new facade on Piazza del Parlamento.
