Since 1954 everyone arriving in Florence through the Porta Romana has been greeted by Mario Romoli's fresco La Vita di Firenze nei Secoli (Life in Florence through the Ages). In 1953 the city council launched a competition for a painting that would celebrate the traditional hospitality of Florence. It was won by Mario Romoli (1908-78). The fresco is painted on the wall of a house overlooking Piazza della Calza and depicts the cultural life of Florence over the centuries. On the right stand a group of famous figures from the past (including Dante), while on the left Romoli depicts himself seated at his easel, surrounded by some of his fellow artists.
